Waldemar Januszczak discusses the background to important works of art, revealing why they were created and what they were intended to convey.
Season 1, Episode 1 - "Mr. and Mrs. Andrews" by Thomas Gainsborough
Januszczak begins by analysing Gainsborough's painting Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, which contains subversive elements at odds with its idyllic subject matter, and appears to have been deliberately left unfinished. In his portrait of two aristocratic 18th-century British landowners, Gainsborough may have intended to depict bird carcasses in the unfinished area in the ladys lap as a not-so-subtle comment on the couples marriage and social position.

In the fall of 2001, envelopes carrying deadly anthrax were delivered to US Senate offices, network news divisions, and a tabloid newspaper. Five people were killed, many more infected, and the nation was terrorized. Seven years later, after mistakenly pursuing one suspect, one of the most expensive and complex investigations ever undertaken by the FBI ended when they identified Army scientist Dr. Bruce Ivins as the sole perpetrator of the attacks - after Ivins had taken his own life. Now, new questions are being raised about the FBI's investigative methods and whether Ivins really did it. FRONTLINE, in a co-production with ProPublica, and McClatchy Newspapers, takes a hard look at the FBI's investigation of the country's most notorious act of bioterrorism.

More than one million immigrants have been deported since President Obama took office. Under his administration deportations and detentions have reached record levels. The get-tough policy has brought complaints of abuse and harsh treatment, including charges that families have been unfairly separated after being caught in the nationwide dragnet. The administration has promised to make the detention system more humane, and more selectively target the most serious criminals. But it faces Republican critics urging stricter measures - and a growing backlash among Latino voters, a key 2012 electoral force. In a co-production with the Investigative Reporting Workshop, correspondent Maria Hinojosa investigates Obama's enforcement strategies and journeys into the secretive world of immigrant detention, with a penetrating look at who is being detained and what is happening to them.

Season 2, Episode 1 - "Boy Bitten by a Lizard" by Caravaggio
The background to Caravaggio's Boy Bitten by a Lizard, which depicts a youth recoiling in pain as a lizard lurking among flowers bites his middle finger. Caravaggios painting contains a lesson to the viewer about the transience of youth, the perils of sensual pleasure, and the precariousness of life. Caravaggio was a penniless artist when he created this early work not long after his arrival in Rome in 1592 and Januszczak sets out to explain the meaning behind the symbolism contained within the painting.

Jamaica land of sea, sand and sun. And a prime example of the impact economic globalization can have on a developing country. Using conventional and unconventional documentary techniques, this searing film dissects the "mechanism of debt" that is destroying local agriculture and industry while substituting sweatshops and cheap imports. With a voice-over narration written by Jamaica Kincaid, adapted from her book A SMALL PLACE, LIFE AND DEBT is an unapologetic look at the "new world order," from the point of view of Jamaican workers, farmers, government and policy officials who see the reality of globalization from the ground up.

I made this video movie documentary. The goal of the film is to make you realize that movies are made to program the viewer to accept certain ideas that are designed to change behavior. This is done because certain agendas and ideas are easier accepted if someone is familiar with them. An example, future technology is put into movies ahead of time. When the technology is released, people are already familiar with it. An example I used in my movie was from Back to the Future II where flat screen TVs are present. Another example, from that movie, that I didnt use is where Martys Asian boss is shown. The programming here is Americas jobs moving overseas to China.
